Colonoscopy

A Clear View of Your Health — Detect. Prevent. Protect.

A colonoscopy is a safe, routine procedure that allows a gastroenterologist to view the inside of your large intestine (colon). It’s one of the most effective tools available for detecting and preventing colon cancer, identifying polyps, and investigating symptoms like bleeding or unexplained changes in bowel habits.

Whether you’re due for a screening or managing ongoing digestive concerns, a colonoscopy offers clarity and peace of mind.

What Is a Colonoscopy?

A colonoscopy involves using a thin, flexible tube with a small camera to examine the lining of the colon and rectum. This procedure:

  • Detects and removes polyps (small growths that could become cancerous)

  • Identifies signs of colon cancer at early, treatable stages

  • Helps evaluate symptoms such as rectal bleeding, chronic diarrhea, or abdominal pain

It typically lasts 30–60 minutes and is performed under sedation for your comfort.

Who Should Have a Colonoscopy?

You may need a colonoscopy if you:

  • Are 45 or older (even with no symptoms — part of routine screening)

  • Have a family history of colon cancer or polyps

  • Experience blood in the stool, persistent digestive issues, or unexplained weight loss

  • Have been diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) or other chronic GI conditions

If polyps are found, they are usually removed during the procedure to prevent future complications.

What to Expect

  1. Preparation: You’ll follow a special diet and take a bowel prep solution the day before to clear the colon.

  2. Procedure: Performed under sedation, the doctor will carefully examine your colon for abnormalities.

  3. Recovery: You’ll rest briefly after the procedure and can usually go home the same day.

  4. Results: If anything is found, your provider will discuss results and next steps with you promptly.

Why Colonoscopies Matter

Colonoscopies are the gold standard for early detection of colorectal cancer — a condition that often shows no symptoms until it's advanced. Regular screenings can reduce your risk and even save your life.
